Understanding The Endocrine System – Thymus

Human-Thymus-Diagram.jpg

The thymus is an important part of our immune system. It is actually part of the lymphatic system as well and sits right behind the sternum. Within the thymus, “T cells” or T lymphocytes mature. T cells are critical to the adaptive immune system, where the body adapts specifically to foreign invaders.

Basic Responsibilities:

  • Controls the development of lymph tissue
  • Regulation of the immune system

Symptoms of Thymus Weakness:

  • Poor immune system function
  • Shortness of breath
  • Coughing
  • Chest pain
  • Trouble Swallowing

Lifestyle Factors:

  • Exercise keeps our lymph and immune system strong
  • You can actually tap on the sternum (chest bone) to stimulate activity of the thymus gland

Nutrition Factors:

  • Processed food and junk food weaken our immune system.  For a strong thymus and immune system, eat high nutritious whole foods
  • Vitamin C rich foods boost your immune system and thymus, such as citrus
  • Cruciferous vegetables are especially good for the immune system, like cauliflower, broccoli and Brussel sprouts
