How to Turn Average Pasta Sauce into a Culinary Delight A cozy bowl of spaghetti is a fun family meal but sometimes store-bought sauce can taste a little boring for those who love real Italian cooking. Not many of us have the time to make a batch of homemade marinara so a quick fix is to use herbs and spices to turn a jar of plain marinara into something that is worthy of a culinary award. Not only is spicing up your food with herbs healthy but it's surprisingly tasty! Fresh is always going to give an amazing depth or flavor but if you only have dried that works great too. Typically I substitute 1 teaspoon of dried herbs for every tablespoon of fresh herbs. When working with a typical jar of spaghetti sauce here are some options to go for:

TIME: | YIELD: 1 quart, 8 servings

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 teaspoon olive or coconut oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh basil (2 teaspoons dried)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh oregano (1 teaspoon dried)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley (1 teaspoon dried)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives (1 teaspoon dried)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary (1 teaspoon dried)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh stevia (pinch of powdered stevia)

Instructions:

  1. Start by warming oil in a pan over medium heat, then add onion and minced garlic.
  2. Sautee the onions and garlic for a couple minutes and then add the dried or fresh chopped herbs to release the aromas and flavors.
  3. After another minute or so, pour in the jar of sauce and let it simmer while preparing the rest of the meal.
  4. Serve warm with Homemade Meatballs. This is guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser!
